To begin your beautiful journey at Andaman, you may decide to travel by ship. Ships sail from Chennai and Kolkata to Port Blair and back around 3 to 4 times a month. However, in Visakhapatnam, you will be able to take a ship only once a month. Your journey by ship will last around 3-4 days, last over 50-60 hours and make a stop at Port Blair for 2-4 days.
You can access the shipping schedule over a month in advance for the mainland-island sector.
We don’t usually recommend traveling by ship. But if you’re the kind of traveler who is looking for an unusual adventure every step of your journey, you can choose this option. Although, we’d like to tell you that you’ll have plenty of that on the islands!
A few facts you should know about Travel by Ship
- Your travel by ship is a 3 to 4 day long journey. Unfortunately, the ship doesn’t act as a cruise liner, which means you won’t be provided with any entertainment options or exciting meals. Before you choose to take this journey, think of the ship as a strictly commercial choice of travel.
- The booking process is everything but easy. The lack of convenience can add a little frustration, since you can only make your bookings by physically visiting the Shipping Corporation offices in Calcutta, Chennai, or Vishakhapatnam. There’s no option for you to make these bookings online.

The kayaking experience was super fun and knowledgeable. Mr.Ali was very friendly and ensured we had a clam and a relaxing paddling experience and enriched us with facts about mangrove trees, it’s ecosystem and Abadman islands and clicked some cool pics 🙂
Ross Island is ideally a two part trip, the morning to evening portion includes going around the island looking at the ruins from the era of the British and Japanese rule. the late evening portion includes a spectacular sound, light & video show (yes you read it correctly!!) which has been created specially for Ross island by Revathi (the actress)
This is a over hyped, and not worth the time and money spent to reach here. It used to be called the “Paris of the East” when the British settled here. But everything is destroyed now.
The only good place here is a beach that is on the other side. You will need to climb down and up a lot of steps to get there.
It was a perfect location for family fun, the erstwhile Ross Island has all the history of a mini Paris, albeit at the cost of all Indian labour and is an example of the British opulence over poverty stricken India. Perfect for taking pics and the picturesque light house was delightful. We took the buggy as we were a large family with kids. There are deer and peacocks too.
