10 Mistakes Tourists Make in Andaman

Page Jump

As people who have been in the Andaman tourism space for over five years now, we have seen several tourists plan their trip to a T but still get some things horribly wrong!

We obviously wouldn’t want you to repeat the same, so here’s a list of 10 commonly made mistakes by people traveling to Andaman.

Go through it and thank us later!

1. Planning for a Short Duration

When it comes to Andaman, there is so much to see, and you will miss out on a lot, unless you plan your stay well. You will need at least 5 days to enjoy Andaman and all it’s aspects.

Port Blair, Havelock and Neil are 3 places you could discover in this time or if you are someone who wants to relax, then it’s better that you set up camp at just one good resort.

You can spend all your time here and enjoy the rest of the place without the tension of shifting all your stuff.

If you’re staying for a long duration, you can discover some of the offbeat places, for example, explore North Andaman. But a stay for less than 5 days isn’t recommended.

2. Not Packing the Right Clothes

A lot of you may be wondering what to wear while visiting Andaman. Keep in mind that this is a tropical destination.

You will be spending most of your time at the beaches that define these islands.

If you’re all about sandy shores, swimming, and sunsets, then pack accordingly.

Pack loose cotton clothing, rubber flip-flops, fast-drying towels, and most importantly, sun protection.

High heels are not recommended as you may be doing a lot of walking here and there.

If you’re traveling in the monsoon season, pack rain-wear such as an umbrella, a raincoat, rain shoes/sandals, and/or a wind-sheeter.

If you’re an adventure seeker, there are a lot of hiking activities in Andaman. Carry walking or hiking shoes and clothing that is comfortable for long hikes through forests.

3. Not Booking in Advance

Booking is always a very crucial decision. Many may have trouble planning for the trip this way so we have a few pointers.

We recommend you book your hotels, ferries, and return flights before you arrive as it would take a load off while you’re here. The tension of booking your next stay will be lifted.

If you’re traveling in large groups, you should also book activities beforehand as it would make the trip much more organised.

If you’re visiting during the peak season, make it a priority to book everything before arriving as availability may become an issue.

4. Expecting Fast Internet Everywhere

It’s time for some myth-busters now. People generally believe that data and the internet will work in Andaman just like the Indian mainland.

As of now (June, 2020), that is not true.

You will have no data network or proper wifi. Expect the bare minimum when it comes to connectivity. This means no video calls, almost no What’s apping, Instagramming, etc.

It will take hours to send office files so it’s probably best to postpone crucial business matters when at Andaman.

This makes Andaman a truly natural haven.

5. Thinking Your SIM Will Work Everywhere

Even though the network may be an issue most of the time, the internet too has its time in the sun here.

BSNL sims work best, so bring that if possible before you come.

As mentioned before, there is no guarantee of a good internet connection, so do not bank on it.

6. Not Carrying Essential Medicines

Many visitors do not carry medical supplies thinking it will be available here.

Note that most things in Andaman are imported from the mainland.

Even though they are well-stocked, supplies can run out during times of need. This is of course a worst-case scenario.

To be on the safe side, bring essentials along, and carry a first-aid kit if possible. It’s better to be safe than sorry.

7. Expecting Luxurious Cruises

When it comes to cruises, there are no luxury ships available like many popular beach destinations.

Ferries also called catamarans are meant for transportation from one island to another and do not allow night stays. They are just a few hours long.

There are some liveaboards available that you have to book in advance.

These are mainly reserved for diving trips.

8. Expecting the Andamans are Exclusively for Honeymooners

Andaman is one of the most romantic places to take your lover. There are a lot of restaurants that are the definition of romantic dinners.

There are also beautiful beaches with mesmerising sunsets that can be a memorable moment for couples.

Andaman is indeed great for couples, but isn’t just for them!

The romantic trend started only around 2016 with new restaurants being set up and romantic places in Andaman being blogged about.

Before that, Andaman was all about families, backpackers, and adventure-seekers and inarguably still is.

So if you are a backpacker, solo traveller, travelling with children or senior citizens, Andaman would be a great place to holiday!

9. Thinking Andaman is Expensive

This is definitely the biggest mistake people make while visiting Andaman. We stress this time and time again on our blogs- Andaman is for everyone.

The activities, living arrangements, and prices, in general, cater to all budgets. Your expenses mainly depend on flight tickets and staying choices.

10. Thinking Andaman is All About Water Sports

No, Andaman is not ALL about water sports.

Sure, if you skip them you will miss out on an essential part of your holiday, but if they are not your cup of tea then there are plenty of activities you can indulge in.

Andaman fits into everyone’s likes, and there is definitely something you’ll find that fits your fancy.
