About Kalapani Museum
The Kalapani Museum in Port Blair was a first-of-its-kind private history museum that took visitors on a compelling journey through the history of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It showcased major historical events, including:
- The first settlement of the islands (1788-1796)
- The Sepoy Mutiny (1857) and its impact on the Andamans
- The formation of the infamous Kalapani penal settlement
- The struggles of political prisoners in the Viper Island and Cellular Jail
- The assassination of Lord Mayo, British India’s Viceroy
- The Japanese occupation during World War II (1942-1945)
- Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s visit and the islands’ brief time under the Indian National Army
- The islands’ re-occupation by the British and eventual integration into independent India
This museum property in Port Blair brought history to life through archival photographs, rare documents, paintings, dioramas, life-size mannequins, artifacts, and documentary screenings. It provided an immersive experience for history enthusiasts and travelers alike.
