How to Reach Andaman & Nicobar Islands

A view of the islands from the sky

Port Blair is the capital city of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Majority of tourists travel by air & arrive at Port Blair’s Veer Savarkar International Airport (around 1.5km from the city centre). Flights only arrive from mainland India and there are direct daily flights to Port Blair from Kolkata, Chennai and New Delhi. Upon arrival, foreign nationals have to wait to get the Restricted Area Permits.

Cars and Rickshaws are often available for transit within the city. Many drivers flock the gate near the airport and one must bargain for the best price. Two wheeler rentals are few but can be found.

Another way of reaching the islands is by taking 3-4 day ship ride from Kolkata to Port Blair/ Chennai to Port Blair. They sail up to six times per week between and are cheaper than flights but have proved to be little comfortable. Tourists have often had bad experiences, which include food poisoning and seasickness. You can read more about the experience of traveling in a ship to Andaman here.
