History of Flag Point

Port Blair Flag Point tiranga is more than just a picturesque coastal landmark, it carries great historical importance tied to India’s struggle for independence.

On 30th December 1943, On 30th December 1943, Netaji Subash Chandra Bose conducted the historic first flag hoisting right here, at the exact spot, declaring the Andaman and Nicobar Islands free from British rule. This act was monumental, as it happened four years before India gained independence in 1947.  It was a bold declaration of power in pre-independent India, symbolizing the nation’s unwavering fight for freedom. Today, Port Blair stands as a witness to the courage and vision of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and the sacrifices of countless freedom fighters.

At that time, the islands were briefly under the control of the Azad Hind government, backed by the Japanese forces during World War II. By hoisting the Indian flag, Bose sent a strong message to the British administration, that India’s fight for freedom was steady and reaching new heights.

One such event occurred on 30th December 2018, Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated a 150-feet Flag pole at South Point, Port Blair, paying tribute to Netaji. This act once again reaffirmed the significance of Andaman as the first land of Indian soil to be freed from colonial rule. The towering flag pole stands with the tricolor Indian flag continues fluttering against the blue Andaman Islands sky, and serves as a powerful reminder of India’s hard-earned independence and a place for visitors to pause, reflect, and feel a sense of national pride.
